Only 59% of UK children can swim 25 metres unaided and too many miss out on the confidence, joy and safety that swimming can bring.
At SwimFin, our mission has always been to help children feel confident and safe in the water.
That’s why we’re delighted that the University of East London (UEL) has conducted the first academic study exploring SwimFin’s impact in school swimming and beyond.
The study focused on both swimming competence and fear of water among primary-aged children and the results are very encouraging:
Aquatic Competence….
Using a modified version of the validated Actual Aquatic Skills Test (AAST) the children using SwimFin demonstrated measurable progress over 12 weeks (6 hours) covering key competencies, achieving an average score of 76%

Fear of Water……
Many felt the SwimFin helped them try new skills and enjoy their time in the water.
More research and data is coming but these early findings highlight SwimFin’s potential to support not just swimming ability and technique but also confidence and enjoyment.
We’re proud to see SwimFin included in this important conversation on swimming education and water safety and grateful to UEL for leading the way in researching innovative approaches that can truly make a difference for children.

As parents, nothing is more important than your child’s safety, especially in and around water. Learning to swim is not just a fun skill; it’s a vital life skill that builds confidence, independence, and ultimately helps prevent drowning.
That’s why at SwimFin, we’re passionate about providing a swimming aid that does more than just keep children afloat, it helps them learn to swim the right way, through all the stages.
You may have seen children wearing colourful armbands, holding onto float boards, or using noodles during lessons. While these aids can provide some support, they often restrict natural movement and can actually slow down progress.
SwimFin is different. Worn on the back like a small fin, it provides vertical buoyancy, keeping the child’s body in the correct swimming position, but crucially, it leaves their arms and legs free to move naturally.
This freedom encourages proper stroke development and builds the strength and coordination needed for real swimming, not just floating.
Many parents tell us that their children feel more confident and independent when using SwimFin. Because it supports without restricting, children feel like they’re swimming on their own, which boosts motivation and enjoyment.
The playful “shark fin” design also adds an element of fun, turning swim time into an adventure.
SwimFin isn’t just a swimming aid it’s a tool designed with long-term safety in mind. As your child’s early stage skills develop, SwimFin provides gradually less support, encouraging independence while reinforcing good technique and water confidence.
This helps children progress faster and safer, isn’t that exactly what every parent wants to see?
SwimFin is recognised globally as a leader in learn to swim innovation, trusted by swimming teachers and aquatic professionals worldwide.
Our goal is simple: to help every child move from water confidence to true swimming ability, making swimming lessons more effective, fun, and safe for children and reassuring for parents.
If you’re looking for a swimming aid that supports your child’s journey towards confident, independent swimming, SwimFin is here to help.

SwimFin is suitable for children from around the age of 2 years, depending on their size and confidence in the water. It’s designed to support a child’s ability, not just their age, and grows with them as they develop their swimming skills.
SwimFin is worn on the back and leaves the arms completely free. Unlike armbands or noodles, which can restrict movement, SwimFin supports natural swimming technique. It provides progressive buoyancy—more support when the swimmer is upright, and less as they lie flat—encouraging correct body position from the start.
Yes, SwimFin is ideal for non-swimmers, including very young children from around the age of 2 years. It offers support while allowing natural movement, helping children build water confidence gradually. As with all swimming aids, SwimFin should always be used under adult supervision.
Absolutely. SwimFin is widely used by swimming instructors around the world. It helps children develop proper stroke technique and body position without relying on incorrect muscle habits. It’s a trusted teaching tool for both beginners and more advanced learners.
Children can perform all four major strokes—freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly—while wearing SwimFin. It also supports learning to tread water and can be used for many water-based games, including water polo, adding fun and variety to swim sessions.
SwimFin encourages a natural horizontal position in the water. As the swimmer leans forward, the buoyancy decreases, helping them develop proper body alignment, balance, and effective swimming technique. It supports muscle memory and better posture from the beginning.
Yes, SwimFin should always be used under close adult supervision. While it’s a powerful and safe tool for learning to swim, supervision is essential for every child’s safety in and around water.
Yes. SwimFin adapts to each child’s confidence and ability. For nervous swimmers, it offers reassuring support. For more confident children, it provides the freedom to move and swim independently, helping them progress at their own pace.
In most cases, yes—but we always recommend checking with the facility first. SwimFin is used in pools and resorts around the world, but local regulations may vary.
SwimFin is the only swimming aid of its kind that provides progressive buoyancy while allowing complete freedom of movement. It promotes proper technique, builds confidence, and makes learning to swim fun. The shark fin design keeps children engaged and excited to get in the water.
Yes. Trials have shown that some children have learned to swim in less than half the time it usually takes. SwimFin encourages good habits from the start and helps children progress more quickly and confidently.
SwimFin straps securely around the child’s torso, resting comfortably on their back. The straps should be snug but not tight, and the fin should stand upright without wobbling. We provide instructions with every SwimFin, and fitting guides are also available online.
Yes, SwimFin has been used successfully by children with a wide range of additional needs. It provides non-restrictive support and is a useful tool in many adaptive swimming programs. We always recommend working with a qualified instructor when necessary.
SwimFin is made from high-quality, materials. It’s lightweight, tough, and built to last.
You can buy official SwimFin products through our website and approved retailers. Be cautious of imitations online—genuine SwimFins carry our branding and meet the highest safety and performance standards.

Swimming is not just a life skill—it’s a gateway to lifelong physical activity, water safety, and confidence. However, despite being part of England’s National Curriculum since 1994, school swimming programmes continue to face persistent challenges. Issues such as insufficient teacher training, financial constraints, and inequalities in access have left many children unable to meet basic swimming benchmarks. Recent data reveals that only 59% of children aged 5-16 can swim 25 metres unaided, with significant disparities linked to ethnicity and socioeconomic status.
Enter the SwimFin, an innovative buoyancy aid designed to support swimmers while encouraging independence. The shark-shaped fin is worn on the back, keeping arms free and enabling natural swimming movements. As swimmers improve, its buoyancy decreases, offering support that adapts to individual progress. However, despite being an official water safety partner of the Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) and an endorsement from the Amateur Swimming Association (now known as Swim England), its application in UK school swimming programmes remains limited.
To address this gap, researchers at the University of East London, in partnership with Parkwood Leisure and SwimFin, have launched a groundbreaking study to examine the SwimFin’s impact on aquatic competency in primary-aged children. Collaborating with local schools and prominent swimming experts, this initiative combines hands-on sessions with scientific assessments to evaluate both physical and psychological outcomes. Early feedback from a pilot study has been overwhelmingly positive, with participants showing increased water confidence and parents and teachers praising its transformative effects.
This year, the study expands to include more pupils who are undertaking a 10–12-week swimming programme delivered by Parkwood Leisure.
“Being able to swim is a key life skill that unfortunately many children and young people currently miss out on. We are therefore very pleased to be supporting this research project to further general understanding of methods to support learning to swim. Our own Safer, Smarter, Stronger learn to swim programme has been designed to develop both physical skills and safety awareness, recognising the need for more children and young people to be able to swim safely.”
Andy Farr, Strategic Director at Parkwood Leisure.
“Swimming is more than a skill, it’s a foundation for life. At SwimFin, we’re passionate about breaking down barriers to ensure every child has the opportunity to learn to swim confidently and safely. This study is an important step toward creating a future where no child is left behind in the water, regardless of their background.”
Kev Moseley MBE, CEO SwimFin.
The project aims to not only improve swimming skills but also foster a sustained culture of water safety by connecting schools, leisure centres, and academic experts. By addressing generational cycles of non-swimming, this pioneering research has the potential to revolutionise school swimming. Stay tuned for updates on this exciting journey to transform water safety education for young people.

Going Back to School: (Re)developing school swimming and water safety through gamification.
Introduction
This research is a collaboration between the University of East London (UEL), SwimFin and the Black Owned Swim School (B.O.S.S).
School swimming delivery has been fraught with financial, logistical and accessibility barriers for several years (Swim England, 2017). The pandemic has exacerbated some of these issues and recent data highlights the worrying statistics that only 59% of children and young people in school Years 1-11 (ages 5-16) can swim 25m unaided (Sport England, 2023).
Furthermore, in the last academic year there were 6.3% fewer Year 7 children able to swim compared to 2017-18. With pool closures and cuts to school budgets, it is not an exaggeration to say we are in a state of crisis when it comes to developing the aquatic and water safety skills of young people.
Teachers in 36 per cent of state primary schools are offering none or fewer than 10 lessons per pupil across the academic year 2022-23 – despite it being part of the national curriculum (Sport England, 2023). Hence there is a need to re-engage with schools and tackle some of the barriers that are curtailing school swimming.
This project aims to encourage those invested in aquatics to move in the same direction and with synchrony when it comes to school swimming. Learning to swim at school may be the only opportunity some young people have to develop this life skill; hence the quality of teaching is imperative, and time needs to be used effectively to aspire to achieve outcomes for all.
